Transmit is the most popular FTP client for Mac, especially among web developers. It comes with a powerful set of features like Sync, Drive feature, and High speed. It comes with a powerful set of features like Sync, Drive feature, and High speed. I am trying to bookmark an ftp download site for my website that is of the form: ftp://[email protected] i know this is a mouthful but it is the correct url and when i enter it into Safari it kicks it out into Firefox which I also have loaded but try to never use. Does anyone know if there are settings in Safari that control this or what is happening here? Is ftp controls set in safari, firefox or elsewhere? Is there a better way to handle ftp on the mac? All my searches show very old threads on this topic. I have been around and around on this one but i am sure that the syntax is correct in the sense that it end up opening firefox and then firefox prompts me for a password which i then enter and I get in. I think i gave an incomplete explanation in the sense that i use filezilla to upload the files but then when I want to test it i open Safari and Safari then plunks me into Firefox which is fine for testing it (I guess.) but it makes me think that I don't understand what/how Safari is doing with it. I mean, I guess someone (Safari?) understands that it cannot open FTP and then Firefox has a setting somewhere that says to Open FTP when Safari can't because Safari can't handle FTP? I mean - I am confused and ideallly I would like to tell someone that they can put the ftp url /into/ ANY browser but don't use Safari or whatever. I mean - it works in Firefox but I am putting it in Safari which then throws it to Firefox which all seems bizarre. Free Ftp Client For Mac Os XI have heard good things about Transmit and will check it out. I am using Filezilla for uploads now (it is also great). Ideally I would like to also see what the other options are for folks that don't have either of these and whether they can expect to enter it into their web browser of choice. Right now Firefox works fine for me and Safari does this odd thing where it ends up opening FIrefox when I enter the url in Safari -which seems bizarre and I'd like to understand. THANKS Jonathan. It should be of the form (see ) Does anyone know if there are settings in Safari The settings are not in Safari. The default FTP client is set in com.apple.LaunchServices.plist. This command in Terminal $ defaults read com.apple.LaunchServices| grep -A 2 ftp should give you a reading of the current settings. It sounds as if you set Firefox to be the default FTP client; if so, there should be a preference for it in Firefox. If not, you should be able to change it in the preferences of the app you decide to use as FTP client, or using the prefpane (make sure to read the docs first before installing it). Is there a better way to handle ftp on the mac? Finder is the default FTP client. Ftp Client For Mac OsDo ⌘K, or Go > Connect to Server, put the correct URI in 'Server Address', and you're good to go. However, it's download only. For full FTP (we'll ignore CLI tools), I've been using for many years Fetch by Fetch Softworks (commercial, but free for educational or charitable purposes). Alternatives are Interarchy (commercial), Transmit by Panic (commercial), CyberDuck (free), FileZilla (free), Fugu (free, but SFTP only), and others.
